Choices and thoughts

Thank you to everyone who spoke with me when I had that silly depression episode. It’s great to know that what I write isn’t in vain, that there are people who are affected by my words, no matter how silly or serious they are.
As many of you know, I’m a voracious reader. My favourite genre is fantasy, and I’m always on the lookout for books that break the fantasy stereotype (which is one of the main reasons why I didn’t pick up authors like George RR Martin and Terry Goodkind; their books sounded very much like typical “swordsman saving the world” kind of fantasy). Peace4Msia: The Experience
Sep 17th
After the recent hoo-ha of the cow head protest and the sheer helplessness I felt, it was a relief to hear that I was not alone. There’s something about civil society in Malaysia that gives me hope that my country is not as bigoted or narrow-minded as the politicians make her out to be.
It’s initiatives like Peace4Msia, Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia, Rescue the Pulau Ketam Dogs, and so many others that make me feel proud to be a Malaysian. It’s people like Haris Ibrahim (who I’ve never met), TVSmith, Regina (founder of the Pixel Project), the IRC gang and the Comic Fiesta Committee, Marina Mahathir, my godfather, Anthony Pinto, and countless others who make me proud to be alive in this country.
Fasting yesterday was an eye-opener for me. Like I’ve said before, I’ve never done a full fast, so I was rather surprised by the results. I didn’t really feel the hunger pangs (by this I mean the sharp, stabbing pains I get when I skip breakfast) at any time yesterday. I didn’t really feel thirsty either which was a blessing when my colleagues made coffee (I did not advertise to them that I was fasting till it was nearing lunch time. See: My Twitter
).
Instead, most of the time I went about my business as I did usually (except lunch; I stayed in the office playing Scribblenauts till Jerry asked for my Sachiko to try the game for himself). This included acting a bit over the top (my colleagues will tell you this is nothing unusual) and shooting at people with Marauderz‘s nerf gun.
It was only later in the day that I started feeling sluggish. By later I meant around 6pm onwards, when I was eagerly counting down to the end of the fast with NikiCheong on Twitter. I couldn’t wait till 7.14pm came around, and at 7pm, [Grayfox] and me went downstairs to search for food. When we went back to the office, I was happy to realise it was already 7.15pm and bit into my chicken sausage bun (sorry couldn’t go vegetarian).
I didn’t have heavenly bells and what not ringing when I bit into the bun. Instead, I simply recognised the food for what it was. Sustenance. And then I went home to have dinner with my family.
That night, I slept early, slightly worried that I didn’t manage to do a kind deed as Peace4Msia suggested. While chatting with a few friends, something the good Reverend Sivin Kit said suddenly clicked in me, which led to this entry. Before I slept, I said a prayer for my country, thanking the Father for the blessings he’s showered, and that today went off so peacefully.
Erna said that being kind wasn’t always synonymous with being nice, and I agree with her. Sometimes you have to be cruel, to be kind, they say. Fasting, in a way, is an embodiment of that. You starve your body to clear the mind.
It’s like living in Malaysia, really. Only when you step out of the ugliness and the hate and the prejudice can you accept Malaysia in all her imperfection. We’ll always have arguments, we’ll always have disagreements, but if we can’t agree to disagree, doesn’t it benefits only our detractors?
When one family member backstabs another and considers themselves holier than the others, then we have a recipe for disaster.*
*This isn’t just for Malaysia, but also mine.
Happy Hari Malaysia.
Of being kind
Sep 16th
To live in the moment is to take it as it comes. It matters not what you were doing, merely that you are aware of it.
Being kind is something’s that very in the moment. It’s not something you can fake. It spurs you to act on the spur of the moment, with only the briefest of thoughts. The best acts, the ones that live on in my mind, are those where spontaneity is an integral component.
Being kind is not hard to do. It can be as simple as a smile from one person to another. A sincere smile from the heart. It can be as simple as sitting down with a small child as you wait for their parents. It can be as easy as listening to someone’s voice. It is as simple as acknowledging the tiredness of another human being, and spending a few extra minutes listening to them.
It can be as large as spending nights looking after the one you love, or even a stranger’s child, simply because you were there. It’s as simple sitting down with an injured cat. It is as large as rescuing dogs from a fate worse than death.
Kindness is motivated by love. Love for life. For everything that’s good in the world.
Let us be kind to each other.
Writing Possibilities

From Joanna Young on Confident Writing: How does writing help to make things possible?
Writing makes you think. It keeps you actively looking for opportunities to write, and then you are open to possibilities beyond simply writing.
Open Up Your Mind
Aug 3rd
My blog, first and foremost, will always remain my home. It’s a messy home, meant for me. If you’ve dropped by, Hi. If you’re a friend, welcome.
From My Journal on Writing.Com, to Ramblings at Blogspot, to Broken Shield and Sword on WordPress and finally my own domain, my blog has changed many names, but it has remained quintessentially, me. Like me, it’s a whimsical thing, with various attempts to keep focus and purposeful.
More than anything, it reminds me there are things to live for. It is a recorder of my days. A snapshot of my life. Origins will tell you part of the story.
Which is why, today, on a whim, this early morning of 3 August 2009, I decided to change the name of this blog. It’s a timely reminder, one that should have come earlier. I’d forgotten this song existed.
Reach into your soul ashita ga mienakute mo
Yes ikiru tsuyosa ga areba
You can take another look from the other side
ai no subete ni deau made
Reach into your soul, even if you cannot see tomorrow
Yes, if you have the strength to live
You can take another look from the other side
Until all you see, is love. (my translation)
Song: Open Up Your Mind
Performed by: Mirai
Original lyrics and translation here.
moshimo ima subete ga umaku nante ikanai
makesou ni naru toki datte
hitomi wo tojireba kokoro kara
sekai ga miete kuru
In this world when life can be so tough
You must be strong
Just believe in yourself and don’t you fear
So open up your mind and close your eyes
Take another look from the other side
kodoku na yoru demo mayoi osoreru toki mo
ima wa hitori demo kono ashi de doko made mo
aruite ikeru hazu dakara
Just hold on tight hitomi tojita nara
Look inside yourself kagayaki ga aru kara
Yes subete shinjite hoshii
You can take another look from the other side
Just hold on tight kokoro kujikete mo
Reach into your soul ashita ga mienakute mo
Yes ikiru tsuyosa ga areba
You can take another look from the other side
ai no subete ni deau made
kono sekai de ikinuiteiku tame no tsuyosa wo
anata ni negatteiru kara
kokoro no tobira wo hiraitara
nanika ga miete kuru
Just remember you are not alone
So don’t you fear
Even though you’re miles away
I’m by your side
So open up your mind and close your eyes
I’ll be there for you no matter where you are
hoshi no inochi nara nagai kedo itsu made mo
onaji kono hibi ga kurikaesu wake ja nai

Just hold on tight hitomi tojita nara
Look inside yourself kodou kanjiru kara

Just hold on tight hitomi tojita nara
Look inside yourself kodou kanjiru kara

Yes chigau sekai ga atte
You can take another look from the other side

Thoughts about Mukhsin
Aug 2nd
Heartbreakingly innocent.
Caught it over TV3 yesterday. There’s really nothing sweeter than children in love… and to watch that relationship die, is heartbreaking. The movie, from a film student point of view, is technically adequate. What makes it great is the director’s interpretation of the subject and a really fantastic cast. Nothing short of winning, really.
RIP, Kak Yasmin. I admit I cried when I saw the last scene. The first thought that came into my mind was now, she is no more. How painful is it, for a parent to bury their child?
*goes get ready for PC fair*
Twitter, Yasmin Ahmad and English
Jul 23rd
Edit: This is a rather fitting 4,000th post on this blog (if my id is correct). Talking about Social Media on a blog.
Around 4.20pm, Sochews tweeted on my timeline that Yasmin Ahmad may have passed away. This was quickly followed by tweets and flurries as everyone tried to verify the news.
As it happened in Michael Jackson and the infamous Death-Roll (as Asohan admitted), details emerged about 1 hour after the initial tweet. Somewhere around 3pm, she had collapsed during a meeting with Media Prima and had been rushed to a hospital. She had passed out, not passed away.
This was then confirmed by The Star (tipped off no doubt by Twitter), but even before that, the Twitter effect had begun. Yasmin Ahmad became a trending topic somewhere around 5.05pm, with most messages, I’m proud to say, being messages of hope, praying for her to get better. She’s now the no 1 trending topic (for the next hour or so I think, at least till 6.30pm).
An interesting side discussion came out of speculation that the person who originally tweeted it or the person who had sent the message that Yasmin Ahmad may have passed away probably got confused between “passed out” and “passed away.” If this is true, then it merely underscores just how far the English standards in Malaysia have fallen.
It’s funny how bad news makes us jump.
Also, I’m sorry, but this is unfortunately true. Makes me laugh and cry to be Malaysian (excuse me, English is MY FIRST TONGUE!)
