2. Why do you read yaoi?

The stories offer an interesting twist on the classic “boy-meets-girl” plotlines. Also, sometimes it’s very interesting to see how same-sex relationships develop.

3. How do you think yaoi manga has shaped or changed your understanding of gay people?

Not really. I have a close gay friend, and he’s a bigger influence than any yaoi manga (only started reading Yaoi manga AFTER I met him).

4. Are/were you a homophobe? If you are a yaoi manga reader, has reading yaoi changed that?

Nope. See 3.

5. How do you think yaoi affects the public’s view on homosexuality?

Perhaps one of the biggest reasons why yaoi is so accepted today is because it’s non-threatening to its biggest fanbase: girls. Same-sex relationships tend to affect the opposite sex by being non-threatening. There is also something deliciously taboo on such relationships frowned upon by society.

However, as we live in a mainly-masculine world, many males would tend to feel threatened by Yaoi as it assails their ideas and views on masculinity. This is because in a yaoi relationship, it is often perceived that one will be weaker than the other (uke-seme relationships). Being helpless is not encouraged for most males, especially in a “tough, macho” world/society. It also implies that these males are powerless, even when they aren’t. Although yaoi is accepted by most females, homophobic males still don’t accept it.

For some, it could also be a subconscious biological taboo for males. As the main idea of sex is to ultimately procreate, for some men, the idea of not being able to procreate and thus spread their “wild oats” is horribly disarming. While sex for females tend to be emphasise emotional bonding, for males, it is a pleasurable activity (correct me if I’m wrong).
