Proposition 8 passes

Which means that gays and lesbians no longer have the right to marry in California.

Disappointing? Yes. Surprised? No.

To the idiot who said,

“People believe in the institution of marriage,” said Frank Schubert, co-manager of the Yes on 8 campaign. “It’s one institution that crosses ethnic divides, that crosses partisan divides.”

I agree, it does cross ethnic lines and partisan divides. It also crosses gender, because marriage means being committed to your partner, to stay with them through sickness and in health.

I know some religious will say that God forbids such marriages because these unions don’t produce children, but hasn’t it ever occurred to you that perhaps these people exist to allow children who come from “traditional” marriage or pairings to experience familial love? I can’t remember when, but I remember reading that there had been no evidence that children who grew up with same-sex parents were the worse for it. In fact, they were well-adjusted!

Blergh. To say that I am disgusted by all of this is an understatement. And it does leave a sour taste in the mouth especially after Obama’s win.

Congrats, btw, President-Elect Barack Obama. May your term be fruitful.
