Ego

This was inspired by a conversation I had with [Joicy] over at Twitter.

I think a bit of ego is necessary for the religious. No, I don’t mean the kind of ego that pumps themselves up to show just how religious they are. I don’t mean the kind too, that takes pride in showing off just how charitable they are either. And I definitely don’t mean the kind that’s arrogant.

By ego I mean the self-confidence and assurance in knowing what you’re doing is right. [Joicy] spoke about being proud of what some would call her “saintly” personality- the pious kind. For me, that is ego being healthy, because she knows who she is, and she’s sticking to it.

A healthy ego is one who is secure in whom them are without being overbearing. My ego tends to be more in the unhealthy part- I am overbearing at times. 😛 But that’s just me.

What do you think your ego is?

  1. Heh…. my ego directly related to my sence of justice and honor… so I dunno what to say~

Geminianeyes: LOL, Are you sure about that?

  2. I know my ego can be overbearing sometimes, and I have a hard time not pushing what is right for me, and what I think about things, onto other people.

Geminianeyes: But that you know means it’s something you can control, isn’t it?

  3. Iiii… Think you know what I’d say.

But the problem I find with a religious sense of rightness is those who feel that because they’re RIGHT, they’re honestly justified in what they do to push their beliefs on others. That (even leaving the illegal and immoral acts alone) all the tactics and nagging and things that make them a tremendous pain in the ass for everyone, they’re completely justified because they’re RIGHT, and their victims will thank them later.

I can do without the Godomites, thanks.

Geminianeyes: I’m not talking about those kinds. I’m talking about the ones who are secure in their faith, not the one that goes around preaching to others.

  4. And you don’t think the preachers are secure? All the missionaries I’ve dealt with are UNSHAKABLY certain their way is right, and ‘SINNERS REPENT: THE PARTY ENDS IN HELL.’

Geminianeyes: Those hide another kind of insecurity- that they don’t measure up, hence the desperation to convert, to tell people that they are right.

Did I also mention that they probably suffer from inferiority/superiority complexes, which is why they cling to their faith so desperately? That’s not faith; that’s fear.

  5. I’m not sure. I’m trying to strike a balance between having a healthy self-identity whilst not reveling in my achievements too much because I know the Big Guy had a major hand in it. Does that make sense?

  6. It’s an interesting theory. I myself tend to lack self confidence in some areas. However, I think I can safely say that pretty much everyone will strive to do what they believe is right. So I seek to align my simple senses of right and wrong with that which I can determine does good for the world. In that sense, I suppose I derive a good deal of my ego from what I choose to believe. In essence, my religion.

  7. [LOL, Are you sure about that?]

haha lama tak check… well yeah. You think why I love stories that relate to superheroes so much? Huh? XD
