Birthday Sighs

The below was a rant I wrote about happenings on my birthday. After reading through it, I realised, there’s no use dwelling on the negatives. Really, what does it get you? At the end of the day, what matters are the people I had fun with, so thank you to all my lovely colleagues who celebrated with me, to all the IRC-ians who gave me wishes and presents, and to my family (parents and aunts/uncles and cousins) for being the people they are. More importantly, thank you to all my friends who stood by me and remembered my birthday. >< I apologise if I forget yours. You can't choose your relatives, but you can choose how to react to them. And really, is it so bad to be considerate?
So one of the highlight of my birthdays when I celebrate with family is that there will always BE something that has the whole family pissed off. This can range from Mom and Dad arguing with each other over trivial things to something bad that has me and bro snapping at each other.

Sigh.

It looks like this year, when I finally hit the Quarter Century number, it’ll be no different. Really, it’s a public road la. It does not have your name on it. You can always park somewhere else, can’t you, just for a short while? And by the way, the person who parked there is our AUNT. Yes, she’s our relative. She is not beholden to you. The world is NOT beholden to you. It does not owe you a living. Nothing falls into your lap unless you work for it.

Remember that. We’re not privileged, we don’t have money like Mom’s side. All we have is our upbringing and our own ethics, the effort we put into work. That’s all we have. And after all the get-rich schemes we’ve seen our family go through and others, it’s up to you if you want to take part in it, but don’t expect me to pay for it.

And by the way, little brother, you of all people should know that telling people to “check out the website” is NOT the way to do it. I’ll admit that I was lazy and I didn’t want to really check out the Tasly thing you told me to, but you couldn’t be bothered to even throw me the address to make sure I went there, could you? You left me with a way to escape, and I took it.

And I really expected you to know better, considering that we both grew up working our a**es off for the customer service industry for at least 2-3 years.

Sigh.

  1. I think being 25 and living with the family puts people on the abrasive against family. Seriously, I love my family, but I don’t know if I could live with them.
