Customer Service is extremely important

Really, having worked in Customer Service for the past 4 years or so (in various fields) I cannot stress enough how important it is that the CUSTOMER COMES FIRST! (No, not THAT KIND of come). It really irritates me sometimes how some CSAs can be so stupid. Or rude.

I used to work for a chain bookstore, and used to receive complaints from customers that one of our other outlets had a crummy attitude, though they had a wider range of books. Now I didn’t believe them (because from my experience of working at my branch, customers come first and we were “reminded” gently whenever possible that it’s not a good thing to send the customers all over the place, in fact it was frowned upon) but when it happened to me, I was shocked and surprised.

Customer service is one of the most important factors for any retail store. In fact, sometimes it’s the deciding factor between two similar stores. That’s why I like shopping at where I used to work despite the fact that they were slightly more expensive. So, here are my tips for those who are thinking of working in that line (no, this only applies to face-to-face service. I’ve had no experience with telephony):

  1. BE POLITE. You may be feeling like shit, you may not want to smile, you may want to bite that customer’s head off, but you should mind your Ps and Qs. You don’t have to smile (will be covered in the following) BUT MIND YOUR MANNERS AT ALL TIMES. It will NOT kill you.
  2. SMILE. Well, not really. Some people’s smiles are scary, but they are nice people in the end. It’s one of the nicer things in life, just smiling. However, be warned that the most innocent of smiles can make a baby cry. *Snickers*
  3. DROP EVERYTHING. Alright, this should be number 1, but it doesn’t always have to be. There are times when you simply cannot attend to a customer (an almost-bursting bladder is one of them), but you should direct them to the nearest PERSONNEL you see at hand, not the nearest service desk.
  4. KNOW WHERE IS WHERE. Familiarize yourself with where everything is.
  5. IF IT’S NOT WITHIN YOUR JOBSCOPE BUT YOU KNOW WHERE/HOW TO GET IT, DO IT. This is an especially important tip to remember if you’re sure you know where it is, and you can do it relatively quickly. Saves you time, makes the customer happy, and shows that you have initiative.

Bah. Some people should never be allowed to handle customers.

So, before starting on my work, I was wondering what to blog about today, and then Edrei points me to Jeff Ooi. Now for those who’ve read my 100 things, you’d know that I’m no fan of his. However, his latest report is quite interesting, and bears very dire straits for anime fans like me.

It is obvious (and hearing calls and reports from everyone else) that the award-winning Faizal Zakaria has mixed up anime and hentai. Hentai is the sub-genre of anime. It is the genre dealing with porn, sort of how erotica is merely a sub-topic of literature, and does not form the whole of it. Anime is the whole genre.

In fact, anime is simply the Japanese term for Japanese animation. Although this is a point of contention by anime fans, even Japanese animators have stated that anime means animation. It is not a special term.

Anime has evolved into a genre, from simply being distinguished from the drawing style against the American style into a full-fledged genre with many sub-genres. Just as there are erotic and pornographic comics, so are there such anime content. However, as mentioned before, these are called HENTAI. This makes them easy to distinguish from other anime, which tend to be more innocous in nature.

Some of the better known anime these days include: Naruto, Sailormoon, Spirited Away, Dragonball, and even the innocent Doraemon are anime. Does this mean that they are porn? I don’t think so. It is quite obvious that someone was sleeping when this article was written.

I would like to challenge this reporter to show me evidence of this so-called easy availablity of such porn. If he does have such evidence, he should have lodged a report with the police, as this is clearly a distribution of illicit and obscene material. However, if he does not, it just goes to show what kind of a fool that he is. I do not mean to insult, but merely to point out the facts.

I understand that journalists do not have the time to do checks all the time, but that does not excuse them from sloppy journalism, as this is what it amounts to.

Please, do not embarass yourself and Malaysian journalism any more by printing anything without checks. This would have taken you only two minutes to verify, yet you insist on printing it anyway.

Shame on you.

Forgotten words

It has often been said that the media is very powerful, but what is often forgotten is that the media can only tell people what to think about, and not so much what to think. However, they can veer the public to think what they want them to think, simply by suppressing information, inserting a few words here and there, and thinly disguising an opinion piece as news (two links in case one gets killed).

I actually have to agree with Usman Bawang and Lainie on this. I really have to wonder why anyone who has a mite sense in their head still reads the papers today. If you ever wanted to know about the power of the media, don’t look at the US. All you have to do is to look at Malaysia, and you can see how effective the media is in spreading information. Of course, all these lil bits are the ones our Government makes known. What about the ones that are not?

Without the information needed to make decisions, a lot of youths these day refuse to vote. Their refusal to vote says as much as them voting: We have no faith in the system. How can we trust a system where the same people always wins and whenever something bad happens, we’re blamed?

And the government wonders why there are less people voting. Excuse me, when you have 40 YEAR OLDS leading supposedly YOUTH organizations, you wonder why the youths refuse to even be registered as voters. (Ish a voter btw).

The following is a summarization of what happens when you have me rambling on my own opinions and picking Viceice‘s brain and adding some of Tiara‘s pieces.

Basically what’s happening is that we have all the overzealous, moralistic, narrow-minded?, no I think for a more politically uncorrect term uneducated, unmigitated, no, I mean misguided pathetic excuses for people in a supposedly multi-racial community fools running amok BECAUSE NO ONE IS THERE TO REIN THEM IN.

What happened to Badawi? Where is the man who would have stopped all this nonsense? Is he crippled by grief? I hope not. Because if he is, then someone else should take over. However, his deputy is that unmigitated idiot Najib. Yes, I have no faith in Najib.

You’re talking about a man who proposed that we send a man up into space, JUST SO WE CAN SAY THAT WE HAVE A MAN IN SPACE. A man who is responsible for the mental scarring of our brains that is PENDIDIKAN MORAL. A man who GAVE MONEY TO A WIDOW TO SHUT HER UP ABOUT HER HUSBAND’S FUNERAL. (Will expand on this later.)

I have no faith in Najib.
