If you have a Samsung S22+ or a S22 Ultra, you can probably shoot the moon, no extra tools required. However, it is recommended that you use a tripod or brace your hands against something when taking the pic, as unsteady hands will make for a blurry photo.
How to take moon photos with Samsung’s S22 Ultra and S22+
All instructions are for the S22 Ultra, but I think it will work for the S22+ and any phone that probably has at least 11x zoom (yes it needs to be greater than 10x).
- In your viewfinder, set the zoom to 10x and then centre on the moon.
- Now, pinch to zoom and keep the moon as centre as possible. On the S22 Ultra, you’ll see a small zoomfinder box in the upper right of the corner.
- Aim for a zoom of about 40-65x (for cameras that can support it). Then give the camera a second.
- The flare should immediately fade to show you the moon’s details. Go ahead and snap!
And that’s it! Some tips:
Moon photo taking tips
- Use an external shutter button – This can help reduce hand shake when you press the phone’s shutter button. If you have the S22 Ultra, then yes, use the stylus!
- Brace your phone against something – For phones like the S22 Ultra, the digital (?) zoom can be compromised by shaky hands. I highly recommend either using a tripod or placing your phone on a level surface, or just bracing it against something that won’t move.
- Give the algo time to work – The moon image can look a bit blurry and less than stellar when you first press the button. However, give the post-processing software a few seconds to kick in – Samsung has done an amazing job with the software, revealing details you may not have noticed before.
